Student Age Calculator: School Eligibility by US State
Enter the date of birth, choose a US state (or your own cut-off date) and see if a child is old enough for kindergarten or first grade.
Age on the cut-off date
How this student age calculator works
Most US states say a child must turn 5 on or before a set date, called the cut-off date, to start kindergarten that fall. This calculator compares your child's date of birth with that date and shows the child's exact age on the cut-off day, how many days they are over or under the line, and the first school year they qualify.
Some states let local school districts choose the date, and a few states changed their rules recently. If your district uses a different date, type it in the optional cut-off box and the result will use that date instead.
Questions about school start age
What is a kindergarten cut-off date?
It is the birthday deadline for a school year. A child who turns 5 on or before that date is old enough to start kindergarten that fall.
Can my child start early if they miss the cut-off?
Some districts allow early entry after an assessment or a request to the school board. Contact your school district to ask about its early admission process.
Is the result official?
No. State and district rules change, so treat the result as a guide and confirm the date and eligibility with your school district before you enroll.
